Funland The Sequel
On Friday 23rd February, Funland Arcade hosted its second ever pinball tournament, Funland: The Sequel.
The 26 players were a mix of both experienced players, including some of the top players in the country, and newcomers who were attending their first ever pinball tournament. There were also lots of supporters watching the event and cheering the players on.
The tournament was held in a Max Matchplay format, with each player assigned to 15 head-to-head games. Each game was assigned randomly to a different player across the arcade’s 10 pinball machines.
Punk Stig took first place, winning 14 of his 15 games - his very first win in his 9 years of playing competitive pinball. Ian Clarricoats was in second place, Chris Poyntz was third, and Anton Stewart came in fourth.
All players received an official Stern keyring, and the top three players received additional prizes including posters, a Stern branded hat and vouchers for free play time at the arcade.
“This was a fantastic event, and the fast-paced format worked really well. It was great to see both new players as well as more experienced ones,” says the organiser, Claire Lickman.
“Even though it is a competition, the atmosphere at these events is always friendly and welcoming, with players helping and encouraging each other - and this event was no exception.But there were also lots of exciting games, including some very close scores!

This tournament was the very first in the UK to feature Stern Pinball Inc.’s brand new pinball machine, JAWS. Based on one of the most iconic films of all time, JAWS allows players to experience all four blockbuster films in the series like never before. It has brand new mechanical features inspired by iconic movie moments, including a shark fin target that swims across the playfield and a Great White Shark bash toy that comes crashing out of the bottom of a fishing boat!
This tournament was officially recognised by the International Flipper Pinball Association (IFPA), the governing body of competitive pinball. At the tournament World Pinball Player Ranking points were on offer for all players, as well as a range of prizes.
