The latest Gambling Industry Statistics released by the Gambling Commission provide an insightful overview of the gambling industry's size and shape in Great Britain, highlighting positive growth trends across key sectors. The report, compiled from data submitted by licence holders, sheds light on Gross Gambling Yield (GGY) by sector, alongside the number of licensed operators and premises.
For land based arcades/AGCs during the period of April 2023 - March 2024, the total
GGY reached £663.91 million, reflecting a 10% increase compared to the previous year. The number of machines in operation also showed a 6% growth, rising to 86,189—a significant rebound from earlier declines in machine numbers.
Key Highlights:
Category B3 machines demonstrated the strongest performance, contributing £462.93 million to the total GGY, a notable 15% increase from the prior year.
Category C machines also experienced steady growth, with their GGY rising to £141.70 million, an increase of 0.2%.
The total number of machines across all categories has seen consistent year-on-year growth since 2022, signalling some recovery and renewed investment in the sector.
For FECs for the same period – the total GGY reached £40.53m down 2% on the previous year. The number of machines in operation also showed a 3% drop, to 11,666—a massive drop from 2008/9 when the total number of machines was 31,012 and GGY was over double today’s amount at £82.48m.
Methodology and Updates:
The statistics are compiled using a combination of data submissions, apportionment, and estimation. Of the 3,610 regulatory returns submitted during this period, 56% were apportioned, and only 0.3% were estimated, ensuring a robust dataset. Provisional figures (marked with ‘P’) indicate ongoing updates as new or revised data from operators is received.
