Southport Pier, the UK’s second‑longest Victorian‐era pier, is set to reopen following a significant infrastructure investment from the UK Government. Closed since 2022 after severe weather damage, the iconic 3,600‑foot landmark will receive vital support as part of Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ expansive £600 billion Spending Review package .

Originally opening in 1860, the Grade II‑listed iron pier has hosted cultural icons from Charlie Chaplin to variety shows and stands as a testament to Britain’s seaside heritage  . The £13 million restoration, first partially funded in the early 2000s, brings renewed optimism as national economic ambitions meet local revival  .

Local MP Patrick Hurley and Mayor Steve Rotheram welcomed the commitment during a joint announcement, affirming that detailed funding plans and project timelines will be confirmed by the end of summer  . Hurley emphasized that the pier’s reopening will create jobs and new business opportunities in the Sefton region  .

Chancellor Reeves highlighted the pier as a flagship example of the new “Pride in Place” initiative — aimed at restoring civic pride, combating the decline of high streets, and delivering tangible improvements to communities  .
