It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Derek Horwood, Chairman of United Distributing Company (UDC), who died peacefully at home in North London this morning (Tuesday 9th July) following a short illness. He was 92.
Derek was surrounded by his beloved wife Sheila and his children Tracy, Mark and Lindsay at the time of his passing. News of his death was shared with staff at UDC earlier today by his son Mark, who continues the family’s legacy within the business.
Derek Horwood’s life was defined by a deep dedication to the amusements sector. He worked first alongside his father and later with his son at UDC, where he played an instrumental role in shaping the company into one of the UK’s leading names in amusement machine distribution. Known across the industry as both a gentleman and a scholar, Derek’s influence stretched well beyond his own company - his counsel, professionalism and warmth earned him the respect of peers throughout the industry and beyond.
A statement from UDC read:
“The whole of UDC mourns this loss and will remember Derek as the true gentleman and scholar that he was.”
Derek was not only a business leader but also a mentor to many and a cherished figure within the community he helped build. His passing will be felt deeply across the sector, especially by those who had the privilege to work alongside him over the decades.
The funeral will be tomorrow. Nicci at UDC will be coordinating arrangements with the industry.

It is with grate sadness that I heard of the passing of Derek Horwood. Together with his father he was my mentor from when I joined Ruffler & Walker in 1969 right through my journey in the industy to 2007. Not only was he a gentleman and scholar but also a good man. My condolences go out to Mrs Sheila Horwood and her loving family. Richard Dunn. Shalom
