Historic seafront landmark Hastings Pier is back in the headlines after its owner, Sheikh Abid Gulzar, confirmed plans to sell the attraction — triggering renewed hopes of returning the site to community control.
A Landmark With a Tumultuous Recent History
Originally opened in 1872, Hastings Pier has endured fires, bankruptcy, and frequent changes of ownership. After a major restoration (completed in 2016), the pier nevertheless entered administration, only to be sold in 2018 for a reported £50,000 to Sheikh Gulzar — despite a community group’s bid raising more than £470,000.
Now, at the age of 81, Sheikh Gulzar says he wants to “let someone else take it on” and has formally notified Hastings Borough Council of his intention to dispose of the pier.
What’s Next?
The next steps will involve the community group Friends of Hastings Pier and other stakeholders making an expression of interest during the statutory moratorium period, which grants them time to mount a bid.
For operators in the amusement and leisure sector, this story serves as a reminder of the complex interplay between heritage assets, private investment and community expectations. As seaside venues continue to face pressure from changing visitor behaviour and maintenance challenges, flexible business models — and partnerships with local communities — may increasingly determine success.
