A major restoration project is set to breathe new life into Southport’s historic pleasure pier, with far-reaching implications for the wider amusement and leisure industry. The Grade II-listed structure, which opened in 1860 and stretches roughly 1.1 km — making it Britain’s second-longest pier — has been closed since 2022 due to structural concerns. Now, following a £20 million refurbishment programme that includes new decking, timber joists, steelwork repairs, upgraded gates and improved CCTV, the pier is preparing for a long-awaited reopening.

For arcades, FECs and seaside operators in the area, the significance of this investment cannot be overstated. The pier is estimated to contribute more than £15 million a year to the local economy, acting as a major driver of footfall along Southport’s coastline. Its return is expected to revive visitor flows, increase dwell time and boost spending across the surrounding leisure mix. Traditional arcades, machine rooms, redemption centres and family attractions all stand to benefit from renewed confidence in the destination.

The refurbishment timeline, at around 14 months, also gives businesses a clear window to prepare. Operators can begin planning promotional tie-ins, updating their machine mix, refreshing front-of-house areas and aligning their offer with the elevated visitor experience the rebuilt pier is expected to deliver. With essential works likely to create some temporary access changes, close attention to local authority updates will help venues adjust staffing, trading hours and operational plans where necessary.

Southport’s investment serves as an important reminder of the value of place-based leisure infrastructure. When a landmark attraction reopens with renewed energy and improved facilities, it creates a ripple effect across the entire local entertainment ecosystem. Operators who stay alert to the opportunity, plan early and position themselves alongside the destination’s revitalisation are likely to be among the biggest beneficiaries as the next wave of seaside regeneration gathers pace.
