UK Councils and Mayors Seek Authority to Regulate Betting and Slot Machine Establishments

A coalition of 36 councils and two mayors across the United Kingdom has formally requested that the government grant them greater authority to regulate the proliferation of betting and slot machine establishments on local high streets according to a report by ITVX. Representing over 12 million residents, these local leaders argue that current gambling legislation is outdated and hampers their ability to address community concerns effectively.

The initiative, spearheaded by Brent Council and endorsed by notable figures such as Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, highlights the increasing concentration of gambling venues, particularly in economically disadvantaged areas. The collective emphasizes that, despite significant public opposition and concerns from public health and safety officials, existing laws prevent councils from intervening in the establishment of new gambling premises.

Mili Patel, Deputy Leader of Brent Council, expressed frustration over the current legal framework, claiming that it denies local communities a voice in licensing decisions. She pointed out that areas like Harlesden, with average incomes significantly below the London average, are being strategically targeted by gambling operators aiming to maximize profits.

A particular concern to the coalition is the number of B3 gaming machines. The report claims that since the pandemic, the number of such machines has increased from approximately 171,000 to 202,000.

The councils and mayors are urging the government to reform gambling laws to provide local authorities with the necessary powers to manage the concentration and impact of gambling establishments in their communities. They contend that such reforms are essential to protect vulnerable populations and maintain the well-being of local neighborhoods.
