Alan Walker, long-serving head of coin operation services at Clacton Pier, has been honoured with a prestigious industry award in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the amusement sector.
Last week, the 80-year-old industry veteran was presented with the Seaside Hero Award by James Miller of Bacta, celebrating more than five decades of service.
Walker, who recently celebrated his 80th birthday, has been part of the Clacton Pier team for over a decade. As head of coin operation services, he oversees one of the largest amusement arcades on the pier, home to around 400 individual machines and staffed by more than 30 team members. His colleagues note that he works seamlessly alongside team members who are decades younger, sharing his knowledge and experience while embracing new challenges and technologies.
Clacton Pier Director Elliot Ball described Walker as “an irreplaceable part of the pier family” and highlighted his adaptability and continued enthusiasm for the industry. “Despite reaching 80 last summer he has no plans to retire any time soon,” Ball added, emphasising Walker’s passion for his work and his invaluable mentorship of younger colleagues.
Before his time at Clacton Pier, Walker served nine years in the Army and held a succession of roles across the amusement and leisure sector, including management positions with several prominent companies and work with showmen across the country. His career reflects the broad evolution of the amusement industry over the last half century—from simple mechanical entertainment to today’s dynamic mix of analogue and digital attractions.
Walker said he was “very proud” to receive the award, which came as a surprise. His story stands as a testament to long-term dedication and passion, and highlights the depth of experience that continues to underpin the UK’s amusement sector.
