Weston‑super‑Mare is embarking on a dramatic seaside revival with a £20 million regeneration plan centered on the long-abandoned Birnbeck Pier—the UK’s only pier connecting the mainland to an island.
Closed to the public since 1994, Birnbeck Pier—and its surrounding heritage structures including the Pier Master’s Cottage, “shell shop,” and Grade II‑listed South Toll House—are now undergoing urgent restoration work. Structural repairs began in July, with landside buildings scheduled for completion by spring 2026 .
The broader revitalisation strategy includes a variety of complementary upgrades across Weston’s seafront:
A new waterpark, set to open this summer
Enhancements to Grove Park—including refreshed entrances, seating, and facilities
A major overhaul of the Tropicana as an indoor/outdoor event venue with an 8,000-person capacity
Enhanced Marine Lake amenities, including improved food and beverage offerings and outdoor swimming
Local tourism officials describe the vision as creating little “pockets” inspired by the creative energy of London’s Shoreditch and Islington, with the regeneration expected to reshape Weston’s identity and ambition as a “trendy new hotspot.”
With these plans underway, Birnbeck Pier stands ready to be reborn—transforming from a derelict relic into a landmark of heritage-led leisure and cultural renewal.
